Lap pools are long, narrow swimming pools with the primary design function of allowing you to swim longer, unobstructed laps. They can be ideal for large backyards that don’t want the pool to take up the whole space.

Lap pools are typically between 1.1m and 2.0m in depth although if you choose a custom lap pool, it can be any depth of your choosing. With added design elements such as tiled lane dividers, lighting, integrated steps and heating, they can be used for swimming day or night, all year round.

Lap pool range pools are available in both concrete and fibreglass pools.

The cost of installing a lap pool will vary widely depending on your design and the material used. Typically, fibreglass lap pool would be cheaper as they are pre-built shells that are inserted into the ground once excavation has taken place, with a shorter installation process.

There are no hard and fast rules for the length of a lap pool but utilising the longest length that is practical on your property is best, so you minimise the number of turns. A good starting guide to maximise your exercise and get the most from your swimming is for your lap pool design to be at least 10m long.

In terms of width, you need your lap pool to be anything from one to three lane widths (a lap lane is about 2.5m wide) but building a custom lap pool design, you can choose your width to fit your space.

The depth of your lap depends if you want to be able to dive. If you want to dive into your pool one end must be at least 2.0m deep. Many backyard lap pools designs are the same depth the entire length, usually about 1.2m.
